So the person moved and you want their new address. Not a problem as long as they moved less than 18 months ago and left the Post Office a forwarding address.

Simply send a stamped envelope to the person's last known address and include your return address on the top left corner of the envelope like in a normal letter. Then just below your return address be sure to include these magic words "Return Service Requested" These buzz words are called an endorsement. When the Post Office receives the letter with the endorsement, they'll send it back to you along with the person's new forwarding address.

Just select "Lookup Name" Instead of "Hear Voicemail" (Mostly accurate).

Reverse Address Lookup/Finding Out Who To Contact When You Sent The Letter To The Wrong Address

1 Use a reverse directory to find out the name of the person or business residing at that address. If you get a contact name click on White Pages and Business Lookups.  Otherwise see below.

2. Call information in the area code where the address is. For example, if  your letter was sent to "Colorado Springs, Colorado" dial 1719-555-1212.  If your letter went to New York, New York dial 1212-555-1212.

3. Explain to the operator that you need a name and phone number so you can contact the people at this address and have the package returned to you.

4. If they can't find this address, ask them for the phone number of the local post office closest to this address.

5. Ask the local post office if they can tell you the name of the person or business that resides there.  Find out if the address is a valid one.  If it is not, it may be that the shipper is liable and should have had the item returned to you.  If you get a contact name click here.  Otherwise see below.

5A. If you have a friend or associate nearby, have him go to that address and investigate the matter. Or try calling the local City Zoning, Property or Tax Commission. These guys usually have a plat or map of all the buildings in the area and who owns them.

5B. Use The Cole's Directory. Through a Cole's Directory you can use the street address to look up the phone number. The Cole's Directory is probably available free at your local library.

 6. Once you have a name, use the Internet White Pages or Business Yellow Pages to find the phone number.  Or find the phone number by dialing information in that area.

Their Dating Profiles

Online dating can be scary. People lie about their age, frequently change their profiles and sometimes have a different profile for each dating site.

But what if you could background someone even before your first date? Even before you know their real name?

With Google Advanced Search, now you can. Their search within a website feature can reveal prior changes to profiles, whether the person is on several sites at once and sometimes even what social events they've attended. You may also learn if they’ve recently moved or are involved in things they never disclosed to you.

Step By Step Approach

  1. Google their profile name, real name, username or user ID. Does his profile change from site to site? Is the nice guy on E-Harmony a cad on letshookup.com? Ask him if he's on other sites and see if he denies it.

  2. Click on the "Cached" link which appears just below each Google search result. Compare the "Cached" old snapshot of the page with the current one. Does the person now like children when he didn’t before? Does his old profile show he's willing to date women age 25-70?

    Got Too Many Hits That Have Nothing To Do With Your Subject? Then Google For Him Within The Top Dating Sites.
    (For a List of such see A List of Top Dating Sites)

  3. Click on Google Advance Search,

  4. In the second box on the form enter his profile name, real name, username or user ID (the box that says: this exact wording or phrase).

  5. In the very last box ("Search within a site or domain"): enter the name of the site where you found him on or the site you want to investigate. Example: match.com or plentyoffish.com or whatever.com. Do not put in www.

  6. Click "Advanced Search" Button.
    (Google with display results found only within that particular website.)

  7. Also look at the "Cached" Link which often appears below each Google search result. Does he now like dogs and children when before he hated them? Did he suddenly grow 5 years younger, lose 50 pounds or change his religion?)

  8. Repeat steps 3-7, this time, using a first name (if known) and then again their first and last name. For example: a Google lookup on meetup.com shows John Smith was on both meetup.com/Vegas and meetup.com Atlanta. This may indicate he just moved to Atlanta-something good to know if you’re going to background his age, criminal record or bankruptcies, etc. It also shows that on the day he stood you up, he was actually schmoozing at another meetup social event!!!)

  9. If You Are Already Dating The Person, lookup their Facebook profile. For more information, ask to become a "friend". This will give you access to their public profile. People list all sorts of information that can be found on the INFO Tab. This may include email addresses, instant chat Ids, and much more which you can Google for even more info about them.

  10. For Twitter, use their advance search to search for first and last name under the box that says "This Exact Phrase." Advance search also allows you to search from 15-1000 miles/kilometers from a particular location.

Friends & Associates/Hidden Relationships

(Using Google, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and Classmates)

Find out who knows who by using the friend/associate features found on Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. These allows you to look up your subject and in certain cases, to see who their friends and associates are. (Sometimes a profile will also reveal what someone was doing that day, i.e. playing tennis, in the hospital, out of town, etc.)

Then do a Combined Google search using the names of the two people who might know each other.

Proving That John knew Sam can make or break a lawsuit. Such can show a person’s obvious bias and also lead to more witnesses and more evidence at trial or deposition.

Practical Applications

  • In a Personal Injury case: to show the lone "disinterested" witness really was friends with the other driver;
  • In a Fraud case: to show the defendant had an accomplice;
  • In a Divorce case: to show the husband was dating his "new" girlfriend for years;
  • In a Employment Discrimination case: to show the newly hired secretary was the manager's long time girlfriend;
  • In a Conspiracy case: to show the owners of these separate corporations were close friends with each other;
  • In a Jury Trial: To Show Jurors knew the defendant, had connections with the company or misrepresented themselves on Voir Dire.
  • When Hiring A Partner, Consultant, Vendor or Associate: To show concealed relationships that could endanger attorney client privilege, trade secrets, etc.

How To Find Who Knows Who

  • For MySpace, search for the person by name or email in the "Browse Members" box and then click to view their friends. This will often show their names and photos, as long as their profile is not kept private.
  • Facebook Requires you log in first for a free sign up, but it also lists the names and photos of people associated with your subject. (as long as profile is not kept "Private").

    To find out more information, you or someone else can set up a profile with or without a photo and ask to become their friend. If your subject agrees, you will now have access to their public profile and what ever data listed on such.

    For Example: you might also be able to find out what they did around a
    certain date (might involve clicking the "show more"/show older posts" link at the bottom of
    the friend's wall page). Plus, their friends might have a bunch of personal
    information listed on the subjects INFO page (See INFO tab up top), some of which could show the extent they know your subject.. Under the INFO Tab might be instant messenger ID names, emails, names of websites companies, etc. Googling such might pull up blogs, flickr accounts, or other information from the same person, and those blogs might contain even more information about the
    person you’re investigating.

  • LinkedIn has a similar feature where you can search for your subject and then view their professional contacts and associates. And don’t forget the people search feature on classmates. It may show that the two people went to the same schools.

Find Out If Different Websites Are Really From The Same Person or Business.
Are two porn websites in cahoots with one another? Want to prove website A is really a front for business B? Or that a server should be shut down because it knowingly hosts malicious websites?

Here's How:

1. Look up who owns each site through a Whosis Lookup or Web address lookup

2. Once you discover owners, officers or agents, repeat steps found in Finding Friends, Associates & Relationships and Proving Relationships Through Other Means.

But What If This information is Kept Private or I Still Can't Find A Connection?
Websites that have private domain information pay extra to conceal their owners and agents. If the address of the host server is listed, read their policy on private registrations. This will tell you what is required to force disclosure. Usually you will not be able to see "private" information without a court order or subpoena. But you never know.

Convincing Law Enforcement The Websites Are From The Same Owner or Business
Use the Internet and some common sense.

  1. To obtain a subpoena or court order, demonstrate that the two sites have suspicious commonalities, i.e. similarities in design, links, fonts, wording, graphics, coding, contact #s, mode of operating, etc.

  2. Establish a connection by Googling the name with and without the ".com" part to find additional information. Do a separate Google search with the name of the other site. Then Google them both together. You could find complaints about one or both of these sites, as well as the much sought after registration information. Next,

  3. Show the two websites are cyber neighbors found on the same server.
    For example: What if two shady businesses had the same crooked scheme, looked very similar, and were later found to reside in the very same office building? And what if this office building was so small it had just a few tenants? Surely this would go a long way in showing they were both connected with one another.

    In the world of cyberspace, the building is called a server and the business tenants are the websites found on the server. And like office buildings, there are millions upon millions of servers; each of which can house only a few hundred or few thousand tenant websites. Since there are billions of websites, scattered on millions of servers, the fact that two of them were found on the very same server is not something to ignore. Especially if the server is a small one and hosts only a few websites. And like in the office example above, the fewer websites on the server, the more likely the server itself can be implicated and shut down.

Use Social Network Sites & Other Directories To Background By:
First Name or Partial Last Name
Full Name
Email Address
Business or Website (or to Reveal Their Business Affiliations)

BY FIRST NAME OR PARTIAL LAST NAME
With a first name, you can find their last name much easier than you think.
In fact, you've probably talked to the person and know other important things that can lead to their surname.

Key is using Google and Special Search Directories to plug in their first name along with other information, such as their first name and partial work address, first name and partial home address, first name and company, first name and Profession, first name and School or their first name and city or state. For people with rare first names, you can also search by first name and their hobbies.

Using Google or Yahoo To Find Their Full Name With Just A First Name

For Example:  Say you meet "Renata" in the office building elevator. You have no clue about her last name or even the company she works for. But you keep seeing her in the office elevator so you know she works in your building. To find Renata's last name, just Google her partial work address.
Renata "1 glenlake parkway"

Even with a bunch of Renatas, it's easy to find the right one. Just put their full names in Facebook or Linkedin for a photo or other confirming information. Then go to Finding People On The Internet (Consumer-SOS).

Search For Rare Names by Putting In Extra Terms.

Even without an address, you can use other information to search by first name on Google or Yahoo. But the name better be rare and you'll need to put in extra terms to narrow it down.  For example: for that bilingual former classmate of yours enter: Minelva Spanish Georgia

For the musician you met at the bookstore try: Mehgan ukulele Texas. Add or remove terms to reduce or increase hits. Extra terms could include a city, state, (don't abbreviate) their occupation, the name of a child, or another hobby. To narrow down your leads, See Listing What You Know About The Person

Finally, if you haven't got their phone # or address by now, try the Internet Phone Books.

See also Find By Full Name

Finding People On The Internet (Consumer-SOS)

Using Special Directories To Find Their Full Name With Just A First Name or Partial Last Name (See How I Found 2 Colleagues)

In addition to the general search engines such as Google or Yahoo, try the special directories where you can search with just a first name or partial last name.

For example, you can search the Age Directories by first name only, or by first name and their city and state. Got a lot of hits? Then, eliminate the leads too young or too old to be your subject. And many of these directories also allow name lookup with just a few letters of their last name.

Ask yourself, is the person a Doctor, Lawyer, CPA or Patent Attorney? Do they belong to a Professional Licensing Board or association or club that lists members? Did they attend high school or College with you (where you'd have access to their Alumni Directory)? If they went to a different school, do you know where and when? For more help, see Listing What You Know About The Person.

If the answer is yes, search for them through the Social Networking SitesState Bar Directories, Professional Licenses and Certifications, Alumni Directories and professional associations they may belong to.

If they've lived in a small town, search by first name in the Local Newspapers. Don't forget to narrow your hits with other search terms if you get too many.

For schools and colleges, search Classmates.com by their first name, and then narrow your leads by school and graduation year. And once you have their full name, weed out obvious false leads based on their age or photo. This can be done by plugging their full names into the Age and Social Networking Sites.

Finally, if you haven't got their phone # or address by now, try the Internet Phone Books.

EXAMPLES OF HOW I FOUND 2 COWORKERS, ONE BY FIRST NAME AND ONE BY PARTIAL LAST NAME
My Former coworker "Kendall" was an attorney from Atlanta and about 35. But what was his last name? To find out, I simply went to the State Bar Directory and searched for him by first name only.

Of the ten results, I could immediately weed out 6. Some of the these included women, attorneys practicing out of state, or obvious old timers admitted to practice when Kendall was in diapers. So that left just 4 names.

To find the right Kendal, I simply put all 4 of the full names into Linkedin. And out popped his photo, employment history and address. And if that didn't work, I would have looked for his photo in other social networks such as Facebook, or Myspace. Even without a photo, I probably could have found him just by Googling these 4 names, or I could have confirmed their ages through the Age Look Up Directories.

I also wanted to find another coworker named "John" but knew only that his last name began with "GA" and that he was a New Jersey Patent Attorney. Fortunately, patent attorneys are much rarer than other attorneys, the same way that CPAs are much rarer than other accountants.

To find his last name, I simply looked him up in the national directory of patent attorneys. To find that his last name was "Gabos" I selected "New Jersey" and typed in John and a partial last name of "GA". That was all it took.
