RPX Patent Database (Shows Patent Litigators)
This is a free database to track who's suing who, on what patents and in what fields of invention. Information includes the names of the plaintiff company, the name of the defendant company and a host of other useful information such as the names of the plaintiff and defendant's lawyers and th law firms they belong to. Use this to ferret out hidden connections, disqualify lawyers from representing cases based on conflicts, or simply to see who's owned a particular patent. Their free copy of the complaint shows where each plaintiff and defendant is incorporated. For more, see their Advanced Search Help.

Uses For The RPX Database:
  1. Search by Attorney Name for who’ve they represented in the past. (tracks who has ties to what, use to ferret out hidden interests, possible joint defense alliances)

  2. Search for Patent Cases filed against a particular defendant (includes cases against non RPX members) (Example: Says over 179 lawsuits filed against Cellco Partnership)

  3. Search by Patent to pull up Lawsuits, Companies That Have Owned The Patent or companies that have been sued on such  (nice to know if the patent has been in prior litigation, been transferred to other shell companies, and who's been sued for infringement.)

  4. Search By Law Firm for the clients they’ve represented in the past/are currently representing (may expose conflicts or possible joint defense alliances, real party in interest, etc.)

  5. Find Out Where the Party has Litigated, in what Market Sector, and in what Court (Shows that party is not new at this game and should be prepared, i.e. they can’t plead ignorance of Court rules, complain of the burden of complying with routine discovery or fail to provide proper metadata typical in these proceedings, etc.)

  6. Learn What Kind of Companies Are Suing (Labeled either Operating company or NPE-NPE stands for non-practicing entity)

  7. Locate Company's State of Incorporation (listed on the complaint)

Other Website Lookups

Hacker-Target’s ‘Extract Links’ tool
This tool allows a fast and easy way to scrape links from a web page. Lists links, domains, and resources that a page links to tell you a lot about the page.

Phonebook.cz (Type in web address, e.g. sleuthforthetruth.com)
Three options: Email addresses: Shows a list of such (just click on the button)
URLs (lists the directories within a website-paste into your browser)
Domains (the whole website-some data on such via https://intelx.io/)

URLS show directories within a website (including someo hidden ones that could show people, projects or data). Once you see a linked list of such, you can paste it into your browsers address box to see if it's still live. Or simply click on it so that you can see a report of what's found on it. (May require you wait a few seconds).

Click on Domains for a similar report on an entire website. Then click on the URL and wait a few seconds This could reveal key people or key info not found by using the company's search engine. Once you see their list of you can paste in Google or click on the links to see if there's info. (pulls up info using https://intelx.io/)

Spot Cybersquaters Who Deliberately Twist the Spelling of Your Website (DNSTwister)

Brand Protection: Find People Who Named Their Website Too Close To Yours Or Choose A Distinctive Domain Name Like No One Else's  (Good to acquire IP, or protect it From TM Infringement)

Use this site to police your brandname and find the people with website domain names too close to your own and warn them to stop using it.

Or pick out a domain name with the key words you want, and choose something very different from what's already out there.
For example: You can look up who owns any domain with the words "Buzz" and "Kill"
Site returns a list of domains along with their owners and partial email addresses.
If you want a distinctive name with these words, you now know who has something similar and can make your name standout from theirs.
Or if you've already trademarked your domain name, the search could show you a list of potential infringers, i.e. those with confusingly similar URLs (possible TM infringment if used as a brand name on their site).

To contact the owner, Google their name along with the partial email address up through the @ sign.
(You can also search the Trademark database to see if the urls or phrases most similar to yours are not trademarked.

Deciphering Deliberately Confusing URLS To Get The Real Website (And Then Lookup Owner)
Have you ever seen a weird URL like http://www.example.com@2130706433:1234/%2a? You'd think that the spammer was sending you to www.example.com, but he isn't -- this one is really going someone where else. The URL deobfuscator will turn those weird URLs into human-readable ones. Telephone Access To Bankruptcy Records (All 50 States & DC)
Simply call each court's automated phone system in each state where that person has lived, and punch in their last name, first name and middle initial. It can work without a middle initial. However, you may get too many listings. To find their middle initial and the states they've lived in, use the Age & Relatives links.

A recorded message will tell you if or when they've filed for bankruptcy. It's all free. Records before 2000 may not be available though I was able to obtain a record from Georgia from 1994.

Here's What You Can Learn If the System Has Record of Their Bankruptcy:

1. Year They Filed For Bankruptcy
2. Reason for Bankruptcy (ex: a consumer debt)
3. Type of Bankruptcy (Chapter 7, 11, 13)
4. Year it was discharged
5. Judge who heard the case
6. Voluntary or involuntary (the former may mean the debtor opted for bankruptcy)
7. Last 4 digits of their Social Security Number

Slight drawback: You have to know the state and District court they went bankrupt in.
In some states, you may have to call up to three #s if you don't know the district court it may have occurred in. (For example: In GA, there's a North, South and Central Bankruptcy court).

If you can't find them, it could mean they rent or gave you a false name.  But it could also mean they live in NYC, or you have the wrong address or city.

OK Caller Reverse Cell Lookup (USA only)
Use 2nd smaller searchbox (ignore the advertisement) to get the name or address of an unpublished number or cell phone #. It's totally amazing and should be used in conjunction with Spy Dialer. (Use both so you can confirm the owner.)

SpyDialer:Verify Cell Phone Owner Plus Hear Their Voicemail (USA)
Do a reverse lookup to see the owner. You can also listen to their voicemail  anonymously. Just select "Hear Voicemail", enter their 9 digit Cell # and “Dial." Their phone won't even ring and you can play back their voicemail to see who it is.  You'll be anonymous because their caller ID will show a number from Spy Dialer. This won't work with landlines, so make sure it's really a cell #.  New Feature: Learn the owner's first or last name. Just select "Lookup Name" Instead of "Hear Voicemail" (Mostly accurate).

Phone # Can Retrieve Skype Username, Country and First, Last Name
Enter number without dashes like this 6785879228. Pulled up my Skype handle, country of origin and my full name. Haven't tested outside of USA.

Enter a cell phone or landline to pull up a name, age and address info. Don't trust the top one to be their current address. But their address could be listed in the middle.

SpyTox

Select "Phone" and enter in a cell # to verify who it belongs to. Found mine and my mom's.

Verify Name of Cell Phone Owner For Free (CallerSmart.com)

With just their cell phone #, email or username tap into a Skype worldwide database of 1.7 billion users to see their names and photos! Does the photo match? Did you get a different name? Getting no matches is one thing. But something is wrong if their contact info leads to an entirely different person! Could be they have many identities.

CallerID Test
5 free lookups, which gave me the correct owner of 50% of the mobile #s I was looking for. Did not give me any false leads.

Caller ID Lookup (CNAM)
Unlimited tries, and often gets cell phone numbers.
Melissa Lookups (Global Phone Check)
Good for finding the owner of cell phone numbers and unlisted numbers. Just put in your number like this: 678-587-9228
(and ignore the box that says "COUNTRY")

Once you get a name, enter the full name at their sister site:https://www.melissa.com/v2/lookups/personator/index
To find out if they rent or own, their age, address etc. NOTE:  after a few lookups, you may be required to sign up for more free usuage. IT'S WORTH IT.

Best to crop a headshot without the clothing. Use to find witnesses for depositions (other people in the photo!)

Best free tool of this sort I've seen.

Reverse Address Lookup/Finding Out Who To Contact When You Sent The Letter To The Wrong Address

1. Use a reverse directory to find out the name of the person or business residing at that address. If you get a contact name click on White Pages and Business Lookups.  Otherwise see below.

2. Call information in the area code where the address is. For example, if  your letter was sent to "Colorado Springs, Colorado" dial 1719-555-1212.  If your letter went to New York, New York dial 1212-555-1212.

3. Explain to the operator that you need a name and phone number so you can contact the people at this address and have the package returned to you.

4. If they can't find this address, ask them for the phone number of the local post office closest to this address.

5. Ask the local post office if they can tell you the name of the person or business that resides there.  Find out if the address is a valid one.  If it is not, it may be that the shipper is liable and should have had the item returned to you.  If you get a contact name click here.  Otherwise see below.

5A. If you have a friend or associate nearby, have him go to that address and investigate the matter. Or try calling the local City Zoning, Property or Tax Commission. These guys usually have a plat or map of all the buildings in the area and who owns them.

5B. Use The Cole's Directory. Through a Cole's Directory you can use the street address to look up the phone number. The Cole's Directory is probably available free at your local library.

 6. Once you have a name, use the Internet White Pages or Business Yellow Pages to find the phone number.  Or find the phone number by dialing information in that area.

Their Dating Profiles
Online dating can be scary. People lie about their age, frequently change their profiles and sometimes have a different profile for each dating site.
But what if you could background someone even before your first date?  Even before you know their real name?  These sites beow are far from perfect. But they are very useful!

Use Their Usernames Or Emails To Pull Up True Name or Postings (Consumer-SOS)
See what they post elsewhere and if they're consistent in what they're saying about themselves.

Is The Email Reputable? (verify it's not just a throwaway email or used by spammers)
Good for dating or buying online when you ask for their email. Gives you 3 free searches a day. (Made up a fake email and it caught me!)  Use this to see if someone is a serial dater and setting up burner emails.

How To Background His Marital Status (Sleuth For The Truth Blogs)

Google Search Within The Dating Site
Note: this link above looks for the profile machoman on the dating site Plenty of Fish. Simply change to the username and website you're looking for. Example: studly site:match.com.

This can reveal prior changes to profiles, whether the person is on several sites at once and sometimes even what social events they've attended. You may also learn if they’ve recently moved or are involved in things they never disclosed to you.

Step By Step Approach

  1. Google their profile name, real name, username or user ID. Does his profile change from site to site? Is the nice guy on E-Harmony a cad on letshookup.com? Ask him if he's on other sites and see if he denies it.

  2. Click on the "Cached" link which appears just below each Google search result. Compare the "Cached" old snapshot of the page with the current one. Does the person now like children when he didn’t before? Does his old profile show he's willing to date women age 25-70?

Got Too Many Hits That Have Nothing To Do With Your Subject? Then Google For Him Within The Top Dating Sites.
(For a List of such see A List of Top Dating Sites)

  3. Click on Google Advance Search,

  4. In the second box on the form enter his profile name, real name, username or user ID (the box that says: this exact wording or phrase).

  5. In the very last box ("Search within a site or domain"): enter the name of the site where you found him on or the site you want to investigate. Example: match.com or plentyoffish.com or whatever.com. Do not put in www.

  6. Click "
  7.  Search" Button.
(Google with display results found only within that particular website.)

  8. Also look at the "Cached" Link which often appears below each Google search result. Does he now like dogs and children when before he hated them? Did he suddenly grow 5 years younger, lose 50 pounds or change his religion?)

  9. Repeat steps 3-7, this time, using a first name (if known) and then again their first and last name. For example: a Google lookup on meetup.com shows John Smith was on both meetup.com/Vegas and meetup.com Atlanta. This may indicate he just moved to Atlanta-something good to know if you’re going to background his age, criminal record or bankruptcies, etc. It also shows that on the day he stood you up, he was actually schmoozing at another meetup social event!!!)

  10. If You Are Already Dating The Person, lookup their Facebook profile. For more information, ask to become a "friend". This will give you access to their public profile. People list all sorts of information that can be found on the INFO Tab. This may include email addresses, instant chat Ids, and much more which you can Google for even more info about them.

  11. For Twitter, use their advance search to search for first and last name under the box that says "This Exact Phrase." Advance search also allows you to search from 15-1000 miles/kilometers from a particular location.

Find Their Related Websites Through Their Name, Company Name, Email or Username (Click Here for Backup Site)
Websites could lead to other businesses, crazy schemes, or the names of close associates who are up to no good.
Once you get a list of sites, do a Whosis lookup to find their emails, mailing addresses and phone #s
Note you don't need the full email address, just the part before the @ sign. For common names, search by email as well.
For Best Results: Search by all 4 if you have this info. An email address may turn up sites not listed under their business, and vice versa.

Do Two Websites Have The Same Google Anaytics ID?
To prove their connected, enter in the website to see what other websites have this same identifier.

Find Friends & Associates Through Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and Classmates

Find out who knows who by using the friend/associate features found on Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. These allows you to look up your subject and in certain cases, to see who their friends and associates are. (Sometimes a profile will also reveal what someone was doing that day, i.e. playing tennis, in the hospital, out of town, etc.)

Then do a Combined Google search using the names of the two people who might know each other.

Proving That John knew Sam can make or break a lawsuit. Such can show a person’s obvious bias and also lead to more witnesses and more evidence at trial or deposition.

Practical Applications

  • In a Personal Injury case: to show the lone "disinterested" witness really was friends with the other driver;
  • In a Fraud case: to show the defendant had an accomplice;
  • In a Divorce case: to show the husband was dating his "new" girlfriend for years;
  • In a Employment Discrimination case: to show the newly hired secretary was the manager's long time girlfriend;
  • In a Conspiracy case: to show the owners of these separate corporations were close friends with each other;
  • In a Jury Trial: To Show Jurors knew the defendant, had connections with the company or misrepresented themselves on Voir Dire.
  • When Hiring A Partner, Consultant, Vendor or Associate: To show concealed relationships that could endanger attorney client privilege, trade secrets, etc.

How To Find Who Knows Who

  • Facebook Requires you log in first for a free sign up, but it also lists the names and photos of people associated with your subject. (as long as profile is not kept "Private").

To find out more information, you or someone else can set up a profile with or without a photo and ask to become their friend. If your subject agrees, you will now have access to their public profile and what ever data listed on such.

For Example: you might also be able to find out what they did around a
certain date (might involve clicking the "show more"/show older posts" link at the bottom of
the friend's wall page). Plus, their friends might have a bunch of personal
information listed on the subjects INFO page (See INFO tab up top), some of which could show the extent they know your subject.. Under the INFO Tab might be instant messenger ID names, emails, names of websites companies, etc. Googling such might pull up blogs, flickr accounts, or other information from the same person, and those blogs might contain even more information about the
    person you’re investigating.

  • LinkedIn has a similar feature where you can search for your subject and then view their professional contacts and associates. And don’t forget the people search feature on classmates. It may show that the two people went to the same schools.

But What If This information is Kept Private or I Still Can't Find A Connection?
Websites that have private domain information pay extra to conceal their owners and agents. If the address of the host server is listed, read their policy on private registrations. This will tell you what is required to force disclosure. Usually you will not be able to see "private" information without a court order or subpoena. But you never know.

Convincing Law Enforcement The Websites Are From The Same Owner or Business
Use the Internet and some common sense.

  1. To obtain a subpoena or court order, demonstrate that the two sites have suspicious commonalities, i.e. similarities in design, links, fonts, wording, graphics, coding, contact #s, mode of operating, etc.

  2. Establish a connection by Googling the name with and without the ".com" part to find additional information. Do a separate Google search with the name of the other site. Then Google them both together. You could find complaints about one or both of these sites, as well as the much sought after registration information. Next,

  3. Show the two websites are cyber neighbors found on the same server.
For example: What if two shady businesses had the same crooked scheme, looked very similar, and were later found to reside in the very same office building? And what if this office building was so small it had just a few tenants? Surely this would go a long way in showing they were both connected with one another.

In the world of cyberspace, the building is called a server and the business tenants are the websites found on the server. And like office buildings, there are millions upon millions of servers; each of which can house only a few hundred or few thousand tenant websites. Since there are billions of websites, scattered on millions of servers, the fact that two of them were found on the very same server is not something to ignore. Especially if the server is a small one and hosts only a few websites. And like in the office example above, the fewer websites on the server, the more likely the server itself can be implicated and shut down.

  4. Show the two websites are built with the same programs, platforms, etc.
As the name implies, BuiltWith lets you find what popular websites are built with. Different tech stacks and platforms power different sites. BuiltWith can, for example, detect whether a website is using WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal as its CMS and provide further details.

Use Social Network Sites & Other Directories To Background By:
First Name, Last Name or Partial Last Name
Full Name
Email Address
Business or Website (or to Reveal Their Business Affiliations)

BY FIRST NAME OR PARTIAL LAST NAME With a first name, you can find their last name much easier than you think.
In fact, you've probably talked to the person and know other important things that can lead to their surname. For example, you don't even need their real name at all, if you have their phone #, or an email address, a username or their physicall address. To verify or learn their full name with the above, see the Sleuth For The Truth Blog Reverse Searches: Background Them By Old & Current Contact Info

See Facebook Friend Browser (Requires A Facebook Account)
For the moment, Facebook has brought back its advanced search function. Look for "Search for Friends." Below this are fields where you can search by name, employment, hometown, education, city or mutual friend. Do not put the name in quotes. Find people by partial name, i.e. enter in John with their current or former company.

Other Ways To Get Their Full name
Key is using Google and Special Search Directories to plug in their first name along with other information, such as their first name and partial work address, first name and partial home address, first name and company, first name and profession, first name and school or their first name and city or state. For people with rare first names, you can also search by first name and their hobbies. Or you can search the same way if you have just a last name.

http://www.reversephonedirectory.com/ is good for finding rare first names when you don't know the last name. Or for unusual last names when you don't know their first name.  Enter your info only in the PEOPLE SEARCH first or last name box on the right hand side. Then choose a state.  If the name is too common it will return only the first 99 or 100 hits.

Using Google or Bing: (Get full name with first or last name plus other Google search term)

For Example: Say you meet "Renata" in the office building elevator. You have no clue about her last name or even the company she works for. But you keep seeing her in the office elevator so you know she works in your building. To find Renata's last name, just Google her partial work address.
Renata "1 glenlake parkway" (Address)

Or if you know where they work:
Tiffany Unitedlex  (Company)

Tiffany Unitedlex Georgia  (Company & State)

Even with a bunch of Renatas, it's easy to find the right one. Just put their full names in Facebook or Linkedin for a photo or other confirming information. Then go to Finding People On The Internet (Consumer-SOS).

Search For Rare Names by Putting In Extra Terms.

Even without an address, you can use other information to search by first name on Google or Bing. But the name better be rare and you'll need to put in extra terms to narrow it down.  For example: for that bilingual former classmate of yours enter: Minelva Spanish Georgia

For the musician you met at the bookstore try: Mehgan ukulele Texas. Add or remove terms to reduce or increase hits. Extra terms could include a city, state, (don't abbreviate) their occupation, the name of a child, or another hobby. To narrow down your leads, See Listing What You Know About The Person

Finally, if you haven't got their phone # or address by now, try the Internet Phone Books.

Using Special Directories To Find Their Full Name With Just A First Name, or a Last Name or Partial Last Name (See How I Found 2 Colleagues)

In addition to the general search engines such as Google or Bing, try the special directories where you can search with just a first name or partial last name.

For example, you can search the Age Directories by first name only, or by first name and their city and state. Got a lot of hits? Then, eliminate the leads too young or too old to be your subject. And many of these directories also allow name lookup with just a few letters of their last name.

Ask yourself, is the person a Doctor, Lawyer, CPA or Patent Attorney? Do they belong to a Professional Licensing Board or association or club that lists members? Did they attend high school or College with you (where you'd have access to their Alumni Directory)? If they went to a different school, do you know where and when? For more help, see Listing What You Know About The Person.

If the answer is yes, search for them through the Social Networking SitesState Bar Directories, Professional Licenses and Certifications, Alumni Directories and professional associations they may belong to.

See Facebook Advanced Search  (Must 1st Be Logged Into Facebook)
For the moment, Facebook has brought back its advanced search function. Search for a person by first and last name and hit enter, cick on "ALL" or next try "PEOPLE". A filter with optons appears on the left.
Below this are fields where you can search by name, employment, hometown, education, city or mutual friend or even the date of the photo you are looking for.

If they've lived in a small town, search by first name in the Local Newspapers. Don't forget to narrow your hits with other search terms if you get too many.

For schools and colleges, search Classmates.com by their first name, and then narrow your leads by school and graduation year. And once you have their full name, weed out obvious false leads based on their age or photo. This can be done by plugging their full names into the Age and Social Networking Sites.

Finally, if you haven't got their phone # or address by now, try the Internet Phone Books.

EXAMPLES OF HOW I FOUND 2 COWORKERS, ONE BY FIRST NAME AND ONE BY PARTIAL LAST NAME
My Former coworker "Kendall" was an attorney from Atlanta and about 35. But what was his last name? To find out, I simply went to the State Bar Directory and searched for him by first name only.

Of the ten results, I could immediately weed out 6. Some of the these included women, attorneys practicing out of state, or obvious old timers admitted to practice when Kendall was in diapers. So that left just 4 names.

To find the right Kendal, I simply put all 4 of the full names into Linkedin. And out popped his photo, employment history and address. And if that didn't work, I would have looked for his photo in other social networks such as Facebook, or Myspace. Even without a photo, I probably could have found him just by Googling these 4 names, or I could have confirmed their ages through the Age Look Up Directories.

I also wanted to find another coworker named "John" but knew only that his last name began with "GA" and that he was a New Jersey Patent Attorney. Fortunately, patent attorneys are much rarer than other attorneys, the same way that CPAs are much rarer than other accountants.

To find his last name, I simply looked him up in the national directory of patent attorneys. To find that his last name was "Gabos" I selected "New Jersey" and typed in John and a partial last name of "GA". That was all it took.

Teaching Facebook To Look For Exact Searches
Facebook guesses at the correct spelling but sometimes this is a problem when the name you're looking for is spelled differently. To get your keywords to be executed exactly:

1.Use quotation marks and hit enter. For example search for "Jonethan" not Jonathan and then hit enter.

2. Click once on the link in your browser address box (up top) after following step 1. In the address box up top you will now see https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q="jonethan"
At the end of this, now add &spell=1 so it now looks like https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q="jonethan"&spell=1

3. Hit enter and now Facebook will search most of the time for the exact words.

2. Click on "lookup" which will then extract their unique Facebook Id #, a large number like this 100003202741882.

3. Add their unique ID # number to the link below.
facebook.com/marketplace/?seller_profile=100003202741882

4. Copy and paste the full link with ID # into your Internet address box (not the Google search box).
Facebook will then display the year they joined Facebook. Try it on your own account! (For your own account you can use Facebook directly.)
